Chickda China…..
So Ive been listening to a lot more tech based podcasts lately as technology has always been a passion of mine. I enjoy getting my news and and learning new things about the tech world and it helps pass the time while I work.
One battle that has me interested is the ongoing battle between Google and China regarding China’s policy of Censoring information from its public. Try looking up info on Tiananmen Square in China and you get a big fat 404. Watch some CNN International on the tube and something the Government doesn’t like is shown and your TV will just go blank for a couple minutes. COOL!! This is nothing new, and Google has been doing it along with Microsoft, Yahoo, Cisco, to name a few, in China for years. So what caused this change?
Well a short summary is that in January Google stated that they would no longer censor their search results on google.cn after a SEVERE hack and intrusion on several gmail accounts. Big whup, hackers in China? NO WAY! They probably wanted to spam them with Large Peen Pills that “Make your love hammer plow her pleasure field all night like macho man.” Well not exactly, these accounts were all held by several well known Chinese activists and traced back to the Government of China themselves. WTF?!?!
Well Google didn’t take kindly to this intrusion and stated that if changes weren’t made they would leave China and that they did towards the end of march. A trip to google.cn now redirects you to google.hk in Hong Kong. However Censorship is still performed on this site by Chinese ISPs per Laws and Regulations. I however applaud Google’s decision and Actions. Its insane what the Chinese Government does in terms of Internet censorship for its people.
Wanna show someone that hilarious ChatRouletteImprov video? Not in China. Youtube is blocked entirely. Thats Okay I’ll just play some Farmville and update my facebook status. NOPE. BLOCKED. Insert pretty much every social network site (twitter, myspace, etc.) ALL BLOCKED.
So your all stressed out and you can’t do anything, well the internet is for porn right? Taffy Pull time. well not in China. BLOCKED! No wonder why they have the most fucked up TV programs. It’s their only release!
Want to relax with your laptop on your couch and work on your website? Well not without first going and meeting with the Chinese government for approval to register and set up that website and wireless router connection. Oh yea and bring your ID Cards and a photo of yourself. Yea they need those documents on file in case they need to “Harmonize” your site and by Harmonize they mean block/censor/delete it and make you disappear. godaddy.com announced it would stop registering .cn domain names after China said “oh yea BTW we need you to get all those documents and photo IDs for us.”
It’s insane what the Government is pulling over there and what the people put up with from the Government, I mean its no Public Healthcare but its close. Right?
